Improve Your Observation Skills To Learn How To Draw Better

by Michael Dale

Can it be true when someone says that they can’t draw?

In reality, most people draw each and every day.

Drawing is like writing. The function of each is to communicate ideas and information. Both drawing and writing is nothing more than the process of making marks onto a surface like paper.

“You can draw if you can write”

Drawing pictures uses the same skills as writing a message.

When you write you don’t think about what it is you are doing…

* You are forming lines

* You are drawing circles

* You are creating curves

Writing comes naturally to you. Because you were taught to write at school the skills of writing become instinctive.

The same skills are used for drawing that you use when you write…

* You can use a series of lines to draw a house

* You use a combination of curves to draw a face

There is nothing to stop you learning to draw. You can learn to draw if you take time and effort to improve your drawing skills.

Avoid Disappointment And Frustration With Good Basic Watercolors!

by Michael Dale

I have to admit that a critic could have been right to say that my simple 2 stage learn how to paint watercolors course was too simple…

The course is too simple for a beginner who expects a painting course to show them how to paint landscapes, still-life pictures, portraits and technical subjects. It is far simpler because it was aimed at artists who wanted to learn how to paint without the pressures of learning to draw.

There are 2 reasons to go right back beyond the basics of painting watercolors…

1. It is a good idea to learn how to paint before painting a Mona Lisa

2. It is a good idea to go back to first principles when your paintings are going wrong

Occasionally, there are lucky people who don’t have any problems. They pick up a box of paints and a brush and easily paint their first watercolor painting. The minority of people who don’t struggle with painting are fortunate indeed.

Alternatively, like you and me, most of us aren’t blessed with such talents…

* It isn’t so easy to learn how to paint watercolor well

Trust Your Artistic Judgment When You Paint And Draw Perspectives

by Michael Dale

When you want to learn about perspectives you will find hundreds of art books to show you how…

Essentially, they will talk about horizon lines, vanishing points and view points. They are an important guide for an artist to master drawing and painting realistic looking art.

With full knowledge of how to create realistic 2-dimensional drawings, an artist soon gains confidence that they can create lifelike paintings…

* Your picture seems to have depth and substance even if it has been produced as a flat image

* Your pencil drawing gives the mood and atmosphere of reality

* Your portrait painting looks as if the subject could leap from the canvas to shake your hand

Yet, perspective drawing can seem to be a mystery to an art beginner.

Even the best artists can rely upon the rules of perspectives too much. Top professional illustrators can end up producing artificial looking paintings even when every effort has been made to respect perspective laws…

* Objects appear to be distorted

* The resulting image gives no more than a sense of flatness

Recognizing your own unique artistic viewpoint is the key to getting the best from perspectives.

an artist is an individual… your art vision is your own!

by Michael Dale

What you paint marks you out as an independent thinker. Your drawings and paintings show your reactions to what you see and feel.

Still, there are Laws of Art you must obey as you get ready to paint your forthcoming masterpiece…

* Guidelines for line and form

* Perspective laws

When you are using color…

* There are color guides

* You need to consider light and shade

* The density of color needs to be thought about

For art beginners these are rules and laws that need to be learned to stand a chance of gaining essential drawing and painting skills.

An intermediate level artist finds that drawing rules provide a necessary guide to artistic achievement. Likewise, color guides assure reasonable painting quality levels.

As a professional artist your experience developed from the laws of art are the foundations of your success. Your painting and drawing are as natural as breathing…

“A master painter’s only worry is translating your vision onto canvas, panel or paper”

Does this mean that a beginner should only spend time worrying about their lack of skill?

Put Heart Into Your Paintings And Drawings… Give Them Life!

by Michael Dale

Perfect paintings and drawings can look lifeless. As an artist searching for perfection don’t miss the key ingredient to great art. The most important painting component is

“An interesting picture will give the feeling of life”

When creating an oil painting, an artist will add layer upon layer of paint. The canvas surface is no longer flat and dull. The finished painting will have a dynamic surface that builds interest and personality

“With a surface of texture and depth”

But, that isn’t all that makes a masterpiece. The painting has its own history. There are background stories that help create great Art

There are thoughts and plans you can’t see. There are ideas and preparations an artist keeps locked away

* There are unknown preparatory drawings that add to a painting’s storyline

* There are color sketches hidden in a forgotten art folder

* There will be re-workings that are scraped away or covered with later layers of paint

Even if you can copy exactly what you see in front of you, you need to give your painting more

* A painting becomes Art when you use your feeling and understanding
