Parley Vous Rock Climbing?

by Spence Talbots

Climbing is one of those sports that has a devoted following. You are not sort of interested in it. You quickly become a fanatic. With this fanaticism comes a certain language of terms developed by climbers, a language you need to know.

A bivouac is one of those things you will only use when you become an advanced climber. It is a sleeping bad/tent that you use in the middle of a climb when night sets. It hands from the wall and is uncomfortable.

I and many people love Elvis. Rock climbers are no different and invoke his name. The Elvis is a term used most often for new climbers that get stressed and fatigued on a climb. The Elvis occurs when a leg starts to shake horizontally, much like Elvis dancing.

As with any sport, a bit of practice will help your climbing. For many, this means bouldering. Bouldering is simply climbing on boulders or other surfaces that provide interesting challenges, but are not particularly high and thus fairly safe.

From Here To There With Trout

by Spence Talbots

In the world of fishing, the trout is one of the common fish you will try to hit. Trout, however, is somewhat of a catch all term. It turns out there are a wide variety of them and we cover them here so you can speak about them like a pro.

If you start fishing regularly, the trout will be a fish you face again and again. There is no single trout per se. Instead, it is a term that refers to a wide variety of spineless fish found in a wide variety of variations.

Trout also are found in general geographic profiles. These include lakes, rivers and streams that have cooler water. Given this broad definition, it is hardly a surprise that they are found in Asia, North American, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

If trout are commonly found, the brown trout is the most common variation found. It is a freshwater fish for the most part, and prefers aerated water that is a bit warmer than usually anticipated for most trout. This means shoreline areas and active moving water.

Bird Watching Jargon For Enthusiasts

by Spence Talbots

Bird watching is like an addiction. Once you are hooked, there is no getting away from it. Since doing so is hopeless, you need to understand the terminology you will here.

Abmigration is the movement of a bird from one breeding area to another by pairing in a flock with a bird from the new area. They then travel during the next season.

Orientation refers to the navigation ability of birds. Some can orient to a particular direction during migration while others seem to be effected by the length of the day. Surprisingly, little is understood about how this happens.

A Field mark refers to distinctive characteristics used by a birder to identify particular birds in the wild. Field marks can be coloring, shapes, size and so on.

Birds are often cleaning themselves. This act is referred to as preening. Each species handles it differently, but a common characteristic is the use of the beak to clean wings and such. Not to be confused with anting.

The brood is somewhat of a catch all term meaning either the young birds hatched from a clutch of eggs or the act of incubating eggs in the nest. It can also refer as a verb to the act of keeping chick warm.
