The liver is key to our very survival, and performs incredible functions in the body.
Without liver function all animals die; and quickly.
In humans the liver is the biggest organ and it is vital to the body’s metabolism.
It has several functions; glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis and detoxification.
Clearly the liver is crucial to a healthy body, and its worth making extra effort to keep it healthy?
This is the case in all vertebrates, including dogs and cats.
The liver is amazing organ, and can regenerate itself with extraordinary powers in a healthy body.
But an unhealthy body can be even too much for the liver to do its incredible work, and the result scan be fatal.
Chronic disease can also afflict the liver. But let’s talk about dogs in particular and how their livers can be affected. Don’t forget too that the liver can be affected by disease.
Chronic Active Hepatitis in dogs can be compared to cirrhosis, the disease that affects many heavy drinkers. The causes are often unknown, but the target is the liver.

But only in a healthy body. In an unhealthy body the liver may well fail, leading to death.
Of course the liver is a target for disease in humans. Your pet can also contract diseases of the liver and other major organs. But let’s look at what could be in store for your pooch if his liver becomes unhealthy.
Dogs can suffer from a disease similar to cirrhosis, which is known as Chronic Active Hepatitis. It is not known what sparks this disease off but the effects on the liver can be devastating.

Cats my experience FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease). This is actually the name for a group of problems that may involve crystals, stones, inflammation, or infection. Some of these urinary tract problems can be life threatening.
Cats self-groom regularly, but excessive licking in the anal or groin area can be a sign of illness. If your cat is urinating more often than normal, this can be a sign of an illness such as diabetes.
